Pollushield™ offers protection against the damage induced by pollution.
This functional polymer composed of a metal chelating ingredient and a powerful anti-oxidant creates a barrier between the skin and the outside world, protecting it from pollutants, like volatile organic compounds, toxic metals, cigarette smoke, particulate matter, and gases. These pollutants drive the generation of free radicals, and can penetrate and adhere to our skin to increase dryness, wrinkling, and hyperpigmentation, in addition to irritation, clogged pores, and acne. They can adhere to our hair strands to make them appear lifeless and dull. Continued exposure can overwhelm skin’s anti-oxidative defenses, leading to oxidative stress, which is responsible for skin damage.
In studies, Pollushield™ was shown to reduce the markers of skin damage, improve anti-oxidative power, decrease lipid peroxides, and decrease the adhesion of micro-particles and metals.
Exposure to metal and oxidative stress can lead to synthesis of the low molecular proteins called metallothioneins, which have metal binding properties. Tests on human skin explants showed the application of 5% PollushieldT™ to skin exposed to metals didn’t increase these markers, indicating that skin was protected by the ingredient. As well, an in vitro study showed that Pollushield™ adsorbed 74% to 97% metal particles to which skin was exposed.
When exposed to pollution, skin shows a reduced density of epidermal Langerhans cells, which causes a decrease in skin’s immunity. Tests on human skin explants showed that skin treated with 5% Pollushield™ then exposed to pollution showed a higher number of these cells as measured by the presence of glycoprotein CD1a. It also demonstrated a decrease in lipid peroxides and an increase in skin’s ability to resist oxidative damage.
Tests on skin explants showed skin exposed to pollution suffered from decreased collagen, altered cell morphology, and keratinocyte cell death. Skin treated with 5% Pollushield™ in carboxymethylcellulose did not show any of these problems.
In a study of 21 female volunteers in using 5% Pollushield™ in a lotion, it was demonstrated that skin was visually cleaner as measured by decreased adhesion of microparticles from pollution after one application while outdoors. In a longer study, the anti-oxidant capacity of the subjects’ skin improved, as measured by the the ferric reducing anti-oxidant power (FRAP) method, and the level of lipid peroxides decreased, as measured by the malondialdehyde concentration.
In cleaning products, like facial cleansers or shampoo, it can facilitate removal of particles from the skin and hair.
In leave-on products, it can increase skin’s anti-oxidative capacity, create a barrier from pollution, bind to metals, and prevent adhesion of microparticles.
