Here are some helpful calculators and conversion utilities to assist you in your cosmetic formulating.
Percentage Calculators
Weight Conversion
Use this calculator to convert between imperial (US) ounces/pounds and metric grams/kilos weights.
Enter one of the amounts to convert from, then click "Calculate." Click "Clear" to start over.
Liquid Volume Converter
We always recommend cosmetic formulating be done by weight, not volume. But when you are working with volumetric measurements, use this calculator to convert instantly between gallons, liters, pints, cups, teaspoons, and even drops, from imperial (USA) volume and metric volume units. Note, for ease of use we have rounded off: 30ml = 1 ounce and 20 drops = 1ml (the metric equivalent, rather than the pharmaceutical standard). Since dropper openings will vary and droplet sizes are also affected by the surface tension of the fluid itself, numbers of drops are, at best, an estimate.
Choose the measure to convert from and the one to convert to, then enter the amount to convert, and click on Convert.
Dilution Calculator
This will calculate the volume of a Stock concentrate (example, Lactic Acid 90%) needed to add to a formula or another product (like a lotion base or water) to achieve another specific concentration (example, a 20% Lactic Acid solution). To use this calculator, you need to know how much you want to make, the concentration you want to have in the final product, and the concentration of the Stock solution you will be using. Enter the total amount you want to make, the concentration you want in the end product, and the concentration of the Stock solution, then click 'Calculate', and the calculator will tell you the amount of 'base' to use (water, lotion, formula etc.) and how much of the Stock solution to add to it to make the amount of product you want in the desired concentration.
The calculator doesn't need to know if you are using teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces, milliliters, grams or kilos; it is simply performing a mathematical calculation. If you are working in ounces, then the results are to be interpreted in ounces, if working in grams or milliliters, then what is displayed will be those. Do not mix and match!
Temperature Conversion
Enter a value for Fahrenheit or Celsius, then click "Calculate".
Date Conversion / Lot Number Generator
Use this Date Conversion utility to assist you in creating Lot Number labeling for your products. This enables you to create a Lot Number that you can easily identify. For example, the first batch of product made on January 2, 2016 might be assigned this number: 1600201 (16=year, 002=day number, 01=batch number of the day). The calculator generates a sample Lot Number for you.
Enter any Date (mo day year) or Day Number (for this year) you wish to calculate. Note, today's date is always the default and is displayed automatically (unless you have had this page displayed overnight, in which case, click "Reset" to refresh the input).
